Should You Do a First Look at Your Destination Wedding?
Ah, destination weddings — where the breeze is salty, the views are dreamy, and the vibes are pure romance. But with all the beauty of tying the knot in paradise comes a big question for many couples: Should you do a first look?
If you’re torn between tradition and practicality, I’ve got you covered! There are pros and cons for doing a first look, so let’s break it down.

First Things First: What Is a First Look?
A first look is a private moment where the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It’s usually just the two of you (plus your photographer, hiding in a bush somewhere), and it can be incredibly emotional, intimate, and, yes, photogenic.

The Pros of Doing a First Look at a Destination Wedding
1. Make the Most of the Time
Chances are, your destination wedding has epic scenery — like beaches, cliffs, and lush jungles. A first look gives you extra time for portraits before the light starts fading after your ceremony (provided it’s an evening one).
2. More Photos, Less Rush
Photographers LOVE first looks because it means more time for portraits, bridal party pics, and even family shots before the ceremony. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re not squeezing everything into cocktail hour.
3. Ease the Nerves
Seeing your partner before the ceremony can calm those pre-wedding jitters. It’s a sweet reminder that you’re in this together — and honestly, who wouldn’t want a little private time before the spotlight’s on?
4. Enjoy More of the Celebration
Destination weddings are often intimate and activity-packed. Doing a first look means fewer photo obligations after the ceremony — so you can head straight to that sunset cocktail hour or beach bonfire with your guests.

The Cons of a First Look at a Destination Wedding
1. It Breaks Tradition
If you’ve always dreamed of that classic aisle moment — where you lock eyes for the first time in front of friends and family — a first look may feel like a spoiler. And that’s totally valid! (But let’s be honest, destination weddings aren’t traditional, either)!
2. You Might Need Extra Time for Hair & Makeup
A first look means starting your glam earlier in the day. That might cut into your morning mimosa and spa time, especially in humid climates where makeup touch-ups are a must.
3. Mother Nature Can Be Unpredictable
Outdoor locations are stunning, but weather can be tricky. A sudden downpour or intense sun might force you to adjust your timing — or scramble for Plan B photo spots.

So… Should You Do a First Look?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are a few questions to help guide your decision:
- Are you nervous and want a quiet moment together before the ceremony?
- Do you want more time to enjoy your cocktail hour or guests?
- Is capturing the scenery (in daylight!) a big priority for you?
- Or, are you a total romantic who dreams of that aisle moment?
If you answered “yes” to most of the first three — a first look might be perfect for you! If the idea feels like it would take away from your ceremony emotions, skip it and go traditional. Either way, your day will be unforgettable.
If you want some special first look photos and love the idea, but DON’T want to do it with your fiance/e, what about with one of your parents or family members? Catching their reaction is priceless and by having the spotlight on them, it guarantees it won’t be missed during your ceremony.
I did a first look with Dana on the balcony of our resort (if you couldn’t already tell)! It was a sweet way to get the jitters out of the way, and made me even more excited to greet him at the end of the aisle!

Fun First Look Ideas for a Destination Wedding
If you decide to go for it, here are some ways to make your first look extra special:
- In the middle of a tropical garden or jungle path
- In front of a dramatic cliffside or ocean view
- On the balcony of your resort suite overlooking the sea
- With a twist — like a blindfold or tapping on the shoulder
Don’t forget to bring tissues, and maybe even write a little note or vow to read during your moment together.
