Destination Wedding Site Visits – Are They Necessary?
Planning a destination wedding and can’t decide on a venue? That’s what site visits for destination weddings were meant for! But unsure of whether they’re absolutely necessary or not?
That’s where this guide comes in handy. You can be the judge (spoiler alert, I didn’t go on one!).

What is a Destination Wedding Site Visit?
A site visit is exactly what it sounds like!
It’s a planned trip to your destination wedding resort or venue to scope out the area, meet with vendors, try the food, and check out the surroundings.
Site visits – especially for destination weddings – are also helpful if you haven’t finalized a location and you want to narrow down a venue. Seeing these places in person often helps couples make their decision.
Your destination wedding travel agent can help you organize your visit and recommend the best time to go.
The Role of a Site Visit in Your Destination Wedding
If you can manage going on a site visit, I do encourage it. When we were planning our destination wedding, I couldn’t decide on a resort. We ended up booking one we’d been to before because we were familiar with it. If we had a short-list of resorts, we could’ve toured them and had a better idea of which one to pick.
Essentially, that’s what the purpose is of a site visit – for you to feel confident in your choice.
Site visits allow you and your partner to assess every aspect—the vibe, the scenery, the facilities—of your potential wedding site. This firsthand experience goes miles beyond scrolling through pictures online and ensures that there are no unwanted surprises on your big day.

Is a Site Visit Necessary for Destination Weddings?
Absolutely not!
Tons of couples book their destination weddings sight unseen. Can they help? Yes, but if you can’t swing it, don’t sweat it!
Pros of Conducting a Site Visit
When it comes to planning a destination wedding, site visits have a ton of advantages.
Seeing the space in person, the various ceremony and reception areas, the venue itself (and all it offers!), the food, activities, etc. goes far beyond online groups and photos.
Eliminating the guesswork out of the actual wedding spaces and the feel of the resort can undoubtedly calm your nerves (and stress)! It also helps you to be better equipped to answer guest’s questions about the resort.
Site visits grant you the chance to meet with vendors, like hair and makeup stylists. Makeup trials can help you settle your nerves about any uncertainties to make sure it’s the right fit.

Cons of a Site Visit
While the practicality of a destination wedding venue site visit is hard to resist, there are potential drawbacks that can’t be overlooked.
Of course, this is the additional cost associated with taking time off work, getting your flights and accommodations can add up. However, many resorts offer site preview packages which help a lot when it comes to planning and finances!
Many couples find that the benefits of doing a site visit for destination weddings—like getting a true sense of the space and meeting key vendors—greatly outweigh the cons.
Preparing for Your Site Visit
A site visit for destination weddings can be a game-changer, but you want to be prepared.
Researching venues before your feet hit the ground not only saves you time but can also help you visualize your day in these spaces.
And let’s not forget the power of a list of questions to ask the wedding coordinator.
Having these questions ready helps you feel confident and in control of how your wedding day unfolds.
Essential Questions to Ask During Your Visit
- What is the minimum/maximum capacity of the venue? You’ll want to ensure everyone you’re dreaming of having there can comfortably fit.
- Do you have backup plans for bad weather? Because let’s face it, sometimes the weather just doesn’t want to cooperate on your big day.
- Can you see examples of previous weddings held here? It’s always a great idea to visualize what your day could look like.
- What is the lighting and wind situation like? This can help with your hair styling and what to expect for photos.

When to go on a Site Visit
So, if you’re wondering when should you schedule a site visit, it will depend on two things:
- If you haven’t narrowed down your venue yet and you want to check out one (or a few) before you decide, or
- After you’ve picked out your venue and want to go visit to finalize your details, go for a tasting, meet vendors, etc.
Maximizing Site Visit Offers from Resorts
Imagine getting a sneak peek at your dream destination wedding venue and saving a penny while you’re at it. Sounds too good to be true?
Some resorts roll out the red carpet for couples planning a site visit for destination weddings. They offer special packages or even credits just for considering them for your big day. It’s like they’re paying you to visit – how cool is that?
For example, Hyatt offers a Big Day Preview, which is a two-day all-inclusive package for couples for $600. If you book your wedding with them, they will credit your wedding package $600! Palace Resorts offer a similar package called the Preview of Paradise, where your stay is credited towards your wedding package.
You have to factor in your flights and transfers into this too, but it’s still a great way to check out your resort and venue options ahead of time!

Alternatives When a Site Visit Isn’t Possible
Not being able to go on a site visit for your destination wedding venue can initially seem like a hiccup in your dream wedding plans. Yet, when physically visiting isn’t an option, rest assured, alternatives can be equally helpful!
Diving into tours on Youtube provided by venues or past couples offers an immersive glimpse into what your day could look like. It’s incredible how much you can grasp the essence of a place, from the layout to the sunset views, without stepping a foot there.
There are also a ton of Facebook planning groups that can end up being a goldmine. There’s something about connecting with couples who’ve gone through some of the things you’re worried about; their insights and experiences are invaluable.
Plus, don’t underestimate the power of online reviews. They can often unveil aspects that you hadn’t even considered.
Remember, thorough online research is your best friend here, making the absence of a physical visit feel like less of a loss and more of a different approach to making informed decisions!
